Signal

The job change signal: the right moment to call

The job change signal is one of the easiest to read in B2B prospecting: a decision maker arrives and reviews their priorities. Here is how to read it, what to write, what to say on the phone, and what it does not promise.

Work the job change signal across three channels, in this order

What happens: someone in your target takes on a new role

The trigger is observable: a person joins a new company or gets promoted internally. It shows on their LinkedIn profile (new title, start date) or in an appointment announcement.

Two cases matter. The decision maker who joins a target account inherits a team, a budget and tools they did not choose. The former customer who moves to a new company already knows your product and can champion it there.

The first months are an audit, not buying intent

The first months, often called the first 90 days, are for taking stock and building a plan. Priorities get set, budgets get reallocated, inherited tools get questioned. Your message reaches someone looking for what to change.

That still does not make them a buyer: they may have no budget and no need in your category. The signal gives you a legitimate reason to write and a topic, their priorities. The rest you confirm by talking.

Email: a short congratulation, then a single question

Skip the first week, flooded with congratulations. A few lines, the new role and the previous one, a single question tied to their function.

Message template · EmailEmail after a new role

Subject: your first months at {company}

Hi {first_name},

Congratulations on joining {company} as {new_role}.

Moving from {previous_role} to this role, people often take stock of the team and the tools. Is that your case?

We help teams like yours {benefit}. If it is a priority this quarter, worth a 20 minute call? If not, just tell me and I will not follow up.

{my_name}

LinkedIn: an invitation with no pitch, then a short message

The invitation sells nothing. Once accepted, the message picks up the email topic from another angle.

Message template · LinkedInLinkedIn invitation and message

Invitation: Hi {first_name}, I saw you joined {company} as {new_role}. I follow {topic} in your industry and would be glad to connect.

Message once accepted: Thanks {first_name}. One simple question: in your first months at {company}, what would you most like to change around {topic}?

Phone: call once the activation has landed

The call comes after an open, an accepted invitation or a reply. Three beats: the reason, an open question, a next step.

Call script · PhoneCall script after a job change

Opening: Hi {first_name}, this is {my_name} from {my_company}. I am calling because you recently took the {new_role} role at {company}. Do you have two minutes?

Discovery: What did you find when you arrived, and what do you want to change by the end of the quarter?

Previous role: How did it work when you were {previous_role} at {previous_company}? What would you like to bring over here?

Next step: If the topic is open, I suggest a 30 minute conversation. If now is not the time, when can I call you back?

  4. Step 04The call context is readyThe prospect card carries the signal, why now, the suggested angle and the activation history (email opened, invitation accepted).

The mistakes that waste this signal

  • Writing on day one, at the same time as everyone else.
  • Congratulating and pitching in the same sentence: the congratulation becomes an obvious pretext.
  • Asserting a need ("you will surely review your tools") instead of asking the question.
  • Ignoring the previous role, often your best angle.
  • Writing to the former employer instead of following the contact into their new role.

This signal opens a conversation, it does not guarantee a purchase

  • Not everyone who changes jobs is a buyer.
  • The window closes. After a few months, priorities are set and tools are chosen: the same message loses its point.
  • LinkedIn profiles are not always current: some people update theirs late, others never.
  • On its own, the signal carries little weight. It counts more when it stacks with another: hiring in the team, a funding round, a reply to your messages.

Frequently asked questions

How long after someone starts a new role should I reach out?

Avoid the first week. Aim for the weeks when they are taking stock, before priorities are locked in. After a few months, lean on another signal.

Should I target a new decision maker or a former customer who moved?

Both, with different messages. With a new decision maker, you are in discovery. A former customer already knows your product: offer to bring it into their new context.

Does an internal promotion count as a job change?

Yes, with less weight: the person already knows the company and its tools. The angle then focuses on their new responsibilities.

Is it GDPR compliant to email someone after a job change?

In B2B, email prospecting relies on legitimate interest: a message related to the person's role, with a one-click unsubscribe. Prosperian applies these rules by default.

Does Prosperian replace the rep on this signal?

No. Prosperian detects the signal, enriches the contact, sends the first messages and prepares the call. The rep keeps the conversation, objections and closing.
