50 B2B buying signals, each with an opening line
A library of signals sorted into four families, so you know when to reach out to an account and what to say.
A buying signal is an observable event (a funding round, a hire, an appointment, a new technology, research on a topic) suggesting that a company has a need or a project under way. This library gathers 50 B2B signals, what each one indicates and a sample opening line to start the conversation.
Signals fall into four families: growth (the company is moving), people (individuals are changing roles), technical (tools are evolving) and intent (the account is researching). Company names in the examples are fictional. You are free to reuse and quote this library with a link to the source.

How to prioritize signals
Not all signals are equal. The same event can be decisive for one offer and irrelevant to another: an IT services firm does not track the same signals as a SaaS vendor.
Start by picking around ten signals that genuinely come before your won deals, then rank them with a few simple criteria.
- Freshness: signals cool down fast. In practice, the sooner you act after the event, the more relevant your message.
- Fit with your offer: the signal should make your solution more useful than before (a growing sales team for a prospecting tool).
- Access to the decision-maker: favor signals that point to an identifiable person, such as an appointment or a job post with a hiring manager.
- Reliability: a public, dated fact (official announcement, job post) carries more weight than aggregated intent data.
- Scarcity: a signal every competitor sees on the same day needs a more careful message to stand out.
Combine several signals
A single signal says something is happening. Several converging signals say the timing is right. The strongest combination pairs a context signal (growth or people) with an intent signal.
In Prosperian, signals are cross-checked across several sources, dated and linked to the account, then feed the intent score that brings the hottest accounts to the top.
- Funding round + sales hiring: budget plus an immediate need for tooling.
- New decision-maker + job post naming a problem: a priority stated by the person who decides.
- Complementary technology adopted + pricing page visit: a possible integration and an evaluation under way.
- Entry into a new country + new team created: prospecting to build with dedicated resources.
- Former customer joins a new company + engagement with your posts: a warm way into a new account.
Signals and GDPR
Working with buying signals means processing personal data as soon as a signal concerns an identifiable person (an appointment, a post, an interaction with your content). GDPR then applies, even when the information is public.
Rules on B2B outreach differ by channel and by country: some countries allow B2B email prospecting without prior consent when the message relates to the person's job, provided they are informed and can easily object, while others are stricter. What follows is a general reminder, not legal advice. Have your practices reviewed by your DPO or legal counsel.
- Define your legal basis (often legitimate interest in B2B) and document it.
- Collect only the data your outreach needs: a company-level signal does not require a detailed profile of the person.
- Tell people at first contact where their data comes from and how to object.
- Honor any objection immediately, on every channel, and keep a record of it.
- Check the terms of use of the sources you rely on: public data is not automatically free to reuse.
- Set a retention period for prospects who do not reply.
